Meditation is the art of being in the moment and experiencing the present fully.

Meditation can be done in many ways. All cultures and beliefs practise some form or method of achieving this state of presence and awareness.

Some methods of meditation incorporate sitting still in silence, walking with clarity, dance or chanting.

No matter the method or form, the goal is still the same – to bring the meditator into the present.

A Guide to Health 8-week Meditation Course explores different methods of meditation. At the end of the 8 weeks, you will come away with the knowledge and skills to utilise your favourite method of meditation. You will be encouraged to use meditation to achieve health and balance into your life.

How can Meditation help you?

It is very common for the modern person (adult or child) to be consistently in a state of stress response called Fight or Flight. In this state muscles are tense, blood is pumping quickly from the heart to the brain and extremities. The mind is alert and ready to make quick decisions, the body is also alert and ready to react quickly.

Energy and resources in this state are taken away from digestion and the immune system.

This is the way the body adapts to a stress and is not meant to last a long time. The healthy body releases the tension and excess hormone residues that were needed for the initial response.

Being in this state over a long period of time depletes energy, makes the body unable to absorb nutrients to form new energy, causes an imbalance in the immune system and can bring the body into a state of exhaustion.

To clean the body of these substances, the body needs to breathe deeply, drink water and rest.

Also common during this stress state is constant worry and concern about past actions and future events. This “mind chatter” can cause it’s own problems – have you realised that most accidents happen when you are not completely concentrating on the task at hand?

Meditation benefits in many ways

Improves memory and study by bringing focus into the present and allowing clarity of the mind

Assists in problem solving and decision making because it clears the mind chatter and the emotions involved

Clearing the mind chatter opens up a whole new range of opportunities and potential options for healing and improvement

Assists in healing and balancing disorders of the mind and body by allowing the body to move out of fight and flight and into rest and digest

Rest and Digest is a state that:

  • Can balance and release the excess hormones and substances from the initial stress response.
  • Relaxes the muscles which clears tension.
  • Allows for the optimum state for healing.

Meditation Groups

Have you started to meditate but stopped because you became too busy? Have you stopped because you could never find the time (you were too stressed)? Has your partner, family, study or work commitments taken priority?

It is often the times when you need it most, that you do not have time for what you need most.

Any health practitioner will tell you that the mind and body need to be in balance for real, long-term health and well being.

Meditation groups work well because:

  • A commitment is made to yourself and to others
  • There is support and sharing of new ideas
  • There is the group dynamic that, when in harmony, can allow you to reach states that you probably could not have experienced on your own.

Please Note: Tania Smith has taken on a new project with the Red Cross and therefore the meditation group will be on hold until February, 2008. Please check this site regularly for updates.
